::Great-Adilabad History::

 

 


Adilabad is one of the most important districts of Andhra Pradesh. The total area of this district is around 16128 sq km. It has a pleasant weather during the winters, with an annual rainfall of 1045 mm. Four major rivers Penganga, Godavari, Pranahita and Kadem, flow through the region. The Adilabad district was earlier known as Edulapuram. It was ruled by some of the famous kings of dynasties such as, Kakatiya Velma, Qutubshahi and Asaf Jah. The major places of tourist's interest are Adilabad, Bellampalli, Nirmal, Mandamarri Sirpur, Lakshettipeta, and Mancheryal,. The other places of interest are Pochera and Kuntala waterfalls, Basara temple,sathnala,Ruyadi piris, Mathadivagu Dam,and Kadam Dam. It also has certain important pilgrimages such as Utnoor, Basar, and Keshlapur temples.

These pilgrimages serve as important tourist attractions. Adilabad is also famous for its handicrafts. This is the birthplace of the famous Nirmal paintings which has its fame across the globe. It is also popular for the bell metal craft. The district of Adilabad is covered by forest area upto nearly 50%. It has three important wildlife sanctuaries which are extremely popular tourist spots. Pranahita wildlife sanctuary - This wildlife reserve is famous for its population of tigers, leopards, a wide variety of deers and several birds. Shivaram wildlife sanctuary - This sanctuary is known for its crocodiles, foxes monkeys, and spotted deer. Kawal wildlife sanctuary - This is well known for its wide variety of fauna ranging from tigers, leopard, deers and panthers.


  • Demographics:



Adilabad town has a cosmopolitan character. People in the town speak predominantly Urdu, Telugu but also other languages such as Gujrati and Marathi. It is one of the richest districts of Andhra Pradesh, containing 20% of state's wealth. About 75% of the district is covered with thick tropical moist deciduous forests, the second largest district in terms of forest coverage, next to Khammam.

Festivals are celebrated with much fervor and people used to go to temples on these days to offer special prayers.Festivals are listed below.   • Regional Festivals:


Telanganites not only celebrate the main festivals, but also celebrate certain regional festivals like Bonalu in Hyderabad, Batakamma all over Telangana districts, Yedupayala Jatara in Medak , Sammakka Saralamma in Warangal district. Other festivals are Nomulu Vrathalu Kedareswara Vratam , Madana Dwadasi Vratam, Vinayaka Vratam, Saraswati Vratam, Varalakshmi Vratam, Krishanshtami Vratam,Ananta Padmanabha Vratam, Margasira Lakshmi Varapu Nomu Katha,Polala Amavasya Vratam , Kumkuma Gowri Nomu,Sraavana Mangalavara Nomu Katha, and Karthika Deepala Nomu
  • Religion:


The major religions of the people are Hinduism and Islam, though Buddhism was the dominant religion up to the 6th century. It is the home of Mahayana Buddhism as revealed by the monuments of Nagarjunakonda. Acharaya Nagarjuna presided over the World University at Sri Parvata. Hinduism was revived in the time of the Chalukyas and the Kakatiyas in the 12th century. The Vijayanagar rule saw the glorious days of Hinduism when the famed emperors, Krishnadeva Raya in particular, built new temples and beautified the old ones. Siva, Vishnu, Hanuman and Ganapati have been the popular Hindu Gods. The Vugra Narasimha swami Temple at Yadagirigutta and Thousand Pillar Temple at Warangal are among the oldest shrines in the state attracting people from different parts of the country for hundreds of years. In terms of influence, Islam occupies the second place. It started spreading from the 14th century onwards. Mosques began to come up in many parts of the region during the Muslim rule. Christianity began to spread from 1701, Especially among the socially disabled people. Educational institutions and churches grew in number in the Circars in the 18th and 19 centuries when the East India Company and later the British government encouraged them. Other European countries were also active in building churches and taking care of the weaker sections of the people.

  • Basara Temple :


     

Basara Temple is a biggest attraction in Adilabad tourism Temple is situated 200 Kms from Hyderabad, AP. Sri Gnana Saraswathi temple at Basara on the banks of river Godavari is the only temple in South India dedicated to the Goddess of learning. The legend has it that after the Mahabharata war, sage Veda Vyasa embarked on a pilgrimage in search of peace.

He reached the serene Kumaranchala hills on the banks of river Godavari and meditated and propitiated the Goddess who eventually appeared before him and granted her presence in the form of the divine trinity. The Goddess ordered the sage to place three handful of sand at three places everyday. Miraculously these sand dunes transformed into the idols of the divine trinity i.e., Saraswathi, Lakshmi, & Kali. These are the presiding deities of Basar today. Despite the presence of the trinity,the temple is dedicated to Goddess Saraswathi. Children are brought here for the ceremony of Akshara puja to start their education with the blessings of the Goddess of Knowledge.The Vedavathi Sila, the Ashtateertha are other places of interest around Basar. Thousands of devotees bath in the river Godavari & seek the blessings of the Goddess during the Mahashivarathri, Dassera navratris and Vasantha panchami.


  • Kuntala Waterfall

Kuntala Waterfall is waterfall located in Kuntala, Adilabad district, Andhra Pradesh. It is located on Kadem river in Neredigonda mandal.[1] It is the highest waterfall in the state of Andhra Pradesh[2] with a height of 147 feet (45 meters).[3]


According to the popular and prevalent local belief Kuntala Waterfall got its name after Shakuntala, the beloved wife of King Dushyanth; the pair fell in love with each other and were mesmerized by the scenic beauty of the surroundings. The locals also believe that Shakuntala used to bathe by the waterfall.


Formed by Kadam River, Kuntala falls cascades down through two steps and can be seen as two separate adjacent falls after the peak rains. It is one of the famous one day outings from Hyderabad. There is a motorable road till the entry point of falls from where steps are available to reach bottom of falls. The falls is about 10 minutes (one way) walk from the entry point.



  • Handicrafts and artisans:




Toy making crafts Dhokra casting crafts are very popular in Adilabad District. Nirmal for toy making & Ushagaon, Jamgaon & Keslaguda village of Jainoor & Kerameri mandal for Dhokra casting, as provided a natural location for the world famoys toys & Dhokra casting. The artisans at Nirmal produce crafts reflecting the local life and environment. Dhokra casting artisans have lived in this district for 100 years, and produce tribal ornaments and zoomporphic figures. The stimulate the growth of toys of Nirmal and Dhokra casting at Jamgaon & Ushagaon villages of Jainoor mandal. The artisans was organised on co-operative lines with a view to make it 1. serve as an instalment for generating employment 2. to offer the public variety of artistic products 3. extend financial assistance and various common facilities and other benefits to promote production and marketing of products.

  • MOSQUES
There as many mosques in Adilabad district. The historic Jama Masjid near badi market stands for its 100's of years history. while the minar of Madina Masjid at Netaji chowk is famous for its beauty, this minar is decorated with colorful lights in every month of Ramzan. The Gulzar Masjid of Masood chowk is convinient for largely surrounded area and many other mosques in other parts of the district. Chanda T dargah is a famous place where people of different community visit here.
  • TEMPLES
The Saraswathi temple at Basar, attracts tousands of pilgrimages every day for "Akshrabhyasa" of their children. There is a temple at Utnoor and Nagoba temple at Keslapur. Every year lakhs of tribals gather at Keslapur for the Jatra. There is a Satyanarayana temple at Gudem.

The Convent church at collector chowk is famous and Ravindra Nagar church, CSI Luxettipet church and many other churches are in Adilabad district
Adilabad have number of tourism spots Kuntala waterfalls, Pochara waterfalls, Ruyadi piris, Mathadivagu project, in the district as part of a new plan for tourism promotion. Rope sliding at the Pochera waterfall would be introduced initially after the expert advice and stability certificates were procured in the coming weeks.
Pochera waterfall, situated about 6 km. on the road to Boath from the Boath crossroads on the National Highway 7 in Neredigonda mandal, would be developed at a cost of Rs. 12 lakhs. Already, an open type shelter, steps to the waterfall and lot of greenery have been developed. The introduction of adventure sports would further attract tourists, according to the plan.
Kuntala waterfall is situated about 12 km. away from the National Highway from Neredigonda mandal headquarters. At Kuntala, an open type of guesthouse, toilets, drinking water facility, steps leading to the fall would be constructed soon. Besides, an observation point would be constructed with the help of the local Vana Samrakshana Samiti, which would facilitate wildlife watching for enthusiasts. The Tourism Department will construct a motel on a two-acre plot, at one of the three places earmarked for the purpose.
The suitable places were near Seetagondi mandal headquarters village, about 12 km from Adilabad town on the National Highway 7, near Gudihatnoor mandal headquarters village, about 19 km from here, and near the Mahila Pranganam near Nirmal town. The most suitable place was Seetagondi considering the abutting dense forest.
